During the production of refined patchouli oil, heavier alcohols like patchoulol are fractionated out, leaving behind a lighter fraction known as patchouli oil terpenes. The patchouli character is still there, and much of the original oil's woody, earthy top notes are retained, but this oil is more volatile and less expensive.
